The Test of English as a Foreign Language, or the TOEFL exam, is one of the most well-known international exams. This exam is often used as a prerequisite for non-native speakers to enter universities in English speaking countries but can be beneficial for those applying to any foreign exchange program or looking to acquire a student visa.
The TOEFL exam is designed to show scorers your ability to use and understand academic English language, not just conversational English. Universities want to accept students who are capable of handling their courses in English. It is important to study specific academic language before taking this exam in order to succeed.
The test takes about three hours to complete, and the scores are valid for 2 years.

The International English Testing System (IELTS) is taken for a variety of reasons including studying or working abroad or migrating to an English-speaking country.
There are two IELTS exams: IELTS Academic, which tests academic language and the ability to communicate in an English school or work environment and IELTS General Training, which assesses the test takers proficiency in everyday situations in English.
In order to take the exam, it is recommended that you are sixteen years of age or older, although there is no minimum age requirement. Most universities require at least a B2 level. For this reason, it would be helpful to prepare by studying the topics required to earn at least a B2 level before taking the exam.
You have two hours and forty-five minutes to complete the exam. Just like the TOEFL, the IELTS exam results are valid for two years.

The Cambridge Exams are different than the TOEFL and the IELTS which are multilevel exams because they test a specific level instead of many. There are five Cambridge exams: KEY, PET, FCE, CAE, and CPE. These exams focus more on everyday language and social situations rather than academic language, although understanding of level grammar is necessary in order to pass the exam. These exams can be taken for diagnostic purposes, to study or work abroad, or to obtain a job in an English-speaking country.
There is no minimum age to take the exam but for each level, there are two exams, one for younger learners with content more appropriate for their age group, and one for adults. Schools often encourage students to take these exams to help place them into leveled English classes.
The length of the exams varies. The PET exam takes 140 minutes while the CPE exam is 236 minutes. The grades for these exams never expire and are valid for life.
